Portugal is a country in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula and has a population of over 10 million people. The Atlantic archipelagos of Azores and Madeira are part of the country and the mainland is bordered by Spain and the Atlantic Ocean.
With its mild climate, 3000 hours of sunshine per year, and 850 km of splendid beaches bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is the perfect holiday destination all year round.
Portugal was founded in 1143, the year of the Zamora Treaty signing. The treaty, agreed upon by D. Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, and Alphonse the VII of León and Castile, recognized Portugal as an independent kingdom. In 1179 that status was confirmed by Pope Alexander III.
The country had a key role in the Age of Discoveries and from the 15th to 16th centuries was considered the world´s biggest empire. With Henri the Navigator, the Portuguese caravels crossed the seas, putting to use the best scientific and practical knowledge of those days. During the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries, they navigated to Africa, the Far East, and the heart of the South American continent. They conquered lands, hoarded wealth, and brought to Europe things never seen before. As we can understand, it was the beginning of the globalization. To celebrate this era, particularly the arrival in India, King D. Manuel had the Jeronimos Monastery built. The small kingdom was then the largest Empire in the world.
From a Latin root, Portuguese is spoken by about 250 million people and is the 5th most spoken language in the world. Portuguese is spoken in Africa (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé e Príncipe), South America (Brazil), and Asia (Macao and East Timor).
