After leaving your accomodation, we travel towards Portugal´s National Park – Peneda-Gerês for our memorable Walking Tour in Nature.
Starting this walk in Portela do Homem, located on the border between Spain and Portugal, we will cross the Roman pathway, and delve into a Unesco Biosphere reserve, Albergaria Forest.
The trail is relatively easy, a 8-kilometer linear route towards Campos do Geres, one of the six national park´s entrance gates. This walking tour takes only 2 hours and 30 minutes and is mostly downhill, making it perfect for a family day tour and nature lovers.
You will reconnect with nature, and be impressed by the Roman cultural heritage, discovering parts of a Roman road which linked two important cities of the Roman Empire: “Bracara Augusta”, nowadays called Braga in Portugal, and “Astúrica Augusta”, the Spanish city of Astorga. It was an important Roman military road, built in the 1st century A.C., the Route (Via) nº 18 of the Antonino Itinerary.
On the way we will have time to pause in some nature spots to admire the breathtaking landscape and visit the local lagoons. You will be able to enjoy the silence and the trully meaning of nature. You will walk through oak forests and stone pavements left by the Romans. Part of this route has disappeared, but you will find well-preserved remains, such as archaeological sites, bridges ruins and roman milestones.
Walking through the Albergaria Forest, you will be amazed by the idyllic waterfalls, wildlife, and centuries-old oak trees. This biosphere reserve stretches along the Homem River, offering an amazing landscape. It is common to find several Cachena cattle and wild ponies far up the mountainside. They have been living in this region for at least 20,000 years, so they are an ancient breed of horses that have adapted perfectly to the mountains and can also brave the Iberian wolf (which still exists) quite cleverly. You will see wild cows, goats and ponies at the roadside, sometimes we will have to wait until the cattle let us through.
After concluding the walking tour (approximately 2h30) you will enjoy an authentic and delicious Portuguese lunch in the picturesque village of Brufe. The “Abocanhado” restaurant is renowned for modern Portuguese gastronomy interpretation, offering typical dishes that use local agri-food products and best represent local cuisine.
Just around the corner, after lunch you will discover the Sanctuary of “São Bentinho”, the country’s 2nd biggest catholic shrine and pilgrimage destination. Built in homage to St. Benedict, the sanctuary dates from the 17th century and it is really worth visitng,
After the sanctuary visit we will return to your accomodation.
